Our materials explained

Hey there, it’s me again.

Accurate depiction of what is going on my mind (or a factory visit)

Since Devin is still adjusting to the burdens of returning from holidays and navigating through piles of emails and other stuff, I will share something about our shoes with you.

I once was asked: What topic could you do a 20 minute insightful presentation on without preparing?

For me that would be probably shoes. How they’re made, what materials can be used, fit and comfort. New and old technologies of making shoes. And also the immense challenge of sustainability in the industry and that most of the shoes on people’s feet are still very, very far away from being sustainably made.

But this would get out of hand now. So instead and little by little, I will tell you something about what we aim to do in those regards.

You already read an overview about the major production steps, but let’s dive a little deeper.

What shoes can you wear all day?

Have a look through your shoe-rack. Which shoes of yours can you comfortably wear all day? What features do your favorite shoes have? And on the other side, what are the reasons why you can’t wait to kick them off once you return home?

We went out and asked exactly that. We cooked it down to :

Comfort, Temperature, Hygiene, Design

For the upper material we asked ourselves: What material ticks the boxes for all those things and is also an ecologically well-sounded solution?

We turned our heads to TENCEL - a lycocell material that is maneuvering its way into footwear.

It is crafted from wood pulp from sustainably managed forests. It absorbs moisture and transports it to the surface, where it can evaporate. And it is bio-degradable!

We design it in a way that allows breathability and temperature control for an all-time pleasant wearing experience. Its soft surface touch feels absolutely pleasant on the skin and feet. And on top of it all it is machine washable.

We are still fine-tuning all aspects to make it as good as it can be but we are on our way to find the sweet-spot.

So, what’s next?

That was a little glimpse into the product details. And as the title suggests, the devil lies in the details. I want to take the time on this newsletter to explain our choices and beliefs in what materials are the right ones for us.

Keep opening this when you want to learn more. Also I am happy to receive questions about that anytime.
